Sour Cherry Sauce

April 25, 2012 2 Comments

During Toppings month on Scoop Adventures, I have featured a crunchy topping, chocolate topping, and peanut butter topping.  For my last toppings recipe of the month, I figured it was about time for a fruity topping.  One of my favorite fruit toppings is Amarena Cherries.  I did some research about how to make Amarena Cherries…yeah not possible…unless you live in Adriatic region of the world.  Apparently Amarena cherries are a special variety of sour cherries that grow in the Mediterranean climate.  And the recipe for preserving the cherries in a sweet syrup appears to be a well-hidden secret.

Peanut Butter Sauce

For the third installment of Toppings month, I bring you a recipe for the elusive yet glorious Peanut Butter Sauce.  I was first introduced to peanut butter sauce during my childhood trips to Friendly’s.  Friendly’s is a mid-atlantic restaurant chain, similar to a diner, that serves food and ice cream.  In my home town, the restaurant served as a family dinner spot, a teenage hang out, and the place everyone met after a school or social event.  I became fond of Friendly’s more for the memories than the food, with the notable exception of the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Sundae.

Chocolate Shell

As a young child, some of my favorite ice cream experiences involved soft-serve ice cream.  Fluffy white and brown swirls atop crunchy sugar cones, covered in chocolate jimmies (those are sprinkles for the rest of you non-Pennsylvania folk).  Every once and a while I was lucky enough to eat a chocolate-dipped swirl cone.  I watched wide-eyed as the pimply teenager behind the counter slowly dipped my ice cream in dark creamy chocolate that would harden as soon as it hit the cone.  Oh how I looked forward to those cones.

Pretzel Crunch

Happy April, everyone!  April is my favorite month.  I guess I am biased since April is my birthday month, but April is the month when Spring began in Maryland and it is the month I associate with new beginnings.  The dim winter begins to fade away and new colors arrive and fresh scents fill the air.  I just caught the scent of the new blooming jasmine on my morning run the other day.  So delightful!
